Introduction:

Tom Doyle has been making superb guitars for over 40 years. His instruments have been played and enjoyed by top professional and serious amateurs. He is also the inventor of the T.W. Doyle pick-ups system, which is unmatched in the resonance and depth it brings to electric guitars. The unique quality of Tom Doyle's artistry is attested to by the fact that he has been the luthier to Les Paul for many years. In addition, Tom is a master guitarist who has developed his own distinctive finger picking style which he combines in his playing with a rare sense of musicality.

After he first heard Les Paul and Mary Ford, Tom began playing guitar at eight years old.  Intrigued by their sound, he began emulating Les Paul as well as the Chet Atkins guitar style of playing.  Eventually he became self-taught and developed his own finger style technique and known by fellow guitarists as “eight track”.  Early on he had experimented with amplifiers, speaker cabinets, and tape recorders to re-create live some of the effects that Les Paul and Mary Ford had on their recordings.   Little did he know that Les would come to see he and his sister play and perform this act.  From that point he worked for the Bitter End in NYC and did touring for them as an opening act for the Lovin’ Spoonful, Richie Havens, the Butterfield Blues Band, and many others. That was the beginning of a friendship with Les that had lasted over 40 years and acting as his long time sound engineer since 1982.

In addition to being an exceptional guitarist, Tom has been a luthier for over 40 years and currently runs his own guitar building school in New Jersey.  He has customized, repaired, and modified guitars for such artists as George Benson, Sting, Bucky Pizzarelli, Al Caiola, Al Dimeola, Tony Mottola, Jimmy Page, and the late Les Paul.  Tom now plays his own handmade “Doyle 1850 Guitar” featuring his own low impedance pickups.

Tom is always pleased to take on new orders for custom instruments. He will expertly match the exacting specifications of the most discerning musicians. Each of his creations is assured of providing years of pleasure, through the beauty, craftsmanship, and tonal excellence Tom creates with his rare artistry.

Currently, Tom performs and records with his wife, Sandy Cory, in the New York area.  They are opening act Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club performing their own songs as well as those of Les Paul and Mary Ford.   They have also received rave reviews of their performances at the Chet Atkins Convention (CAAS) in Nashville.  Tom and Sandy combine beautiful instrumentation of guitar, vocals, flute and drums which they perform regularly at various clubs, private parties, and benefits around the country.
